cotton night-gown
sheer enough to pull my eyes
she pulls the curtains and it’s blue
her whale sings with Takaroa
wails to the shore of us
breath leaving a body
is a karakia
no bra, no worries
equidistant in time
in space Raki watches
as I walk Papa’s spine
Ngaio presents a circle
Of anxiety
Circles of sound clasped
Around her neck.
Our largest cat lies asleep
snoring loudly upon settee
