it’s been a while

but i have a new poem to share. i still have a fascination with the South Korean social media phenomenon of mukbang, “eating broadcast”. some mukbangers keep me glued to the YouTube. i especially credit my mukbang adoration to the creators tzuyang, ebimayo, sanghyuk, plandD, gaeun, and dyeong, who each do different but wonderful work. there’s delicacy, enjoyment, cultural knowledge, new vocabulary, things to try IRL. get into it.

every molecule the body meets makes a memory

I’ve learned from my mukbangers
to open my mouth very wide
to welcome every bite
there is no daintiness in food
we must amuse the bouche
think of the villi and their elation
I wondered for a long time how my mukbangers
avoided mess
but they don’t avoid anything
it’s a matter of welcoming
desire moves the hand; pleasure, the mouth
a smile like a yogi
releasing you from everything
focus only upon the sensation
I take it all in like my mukbangers
my mouth opens much wider than I thought it could
and it holds much more than I thought it could
a mouthful of cool water and I am a lake
a spoonful of purposefully stacked foods and I am an ecosystem
I take it all in
in and out of my mouth all of it in
lungs expand so full vertebrae crackle
diaphragm pulls so deep all the other organs move
make way make way
I say again I’ve learned from my mukbangers
to have faith in myself my mouth
and when I open my mouth very wide
so wide
it’s a matter of welcoming
it's a matter of chewing
it's a matter of digesting
I take it all in
I can take it all in.
