another piece for The Crown Hotel

written after a gig on 27th March 2021

Last night was Friday
was steamy, loud, heady
three sets, many friends
yelled ancillaries, squalls of energy
so sweaty that abnormal Dunners autumn
heat pump became aircon
you could smell the cool, old dust mingling with mildew
into moist air expelled by excited bodies

So anyway I’m back, round two
          women’s kickboxing on the screens
Before the staged activities I wait with Emerson
it rains outside and it’s going to rain frequencies any minute
denim shorts
I know the weather in here
find a surface to plant, and wait
alone this time, committed to the Sound

Black tees converge
            He mahi toi tēnei
 Scary Cars and haunted mills
The Liams emit thunderous mirth
clinking sticks and grinning interludes
an e-bow shoots us with engine noise
we lurch in agreement
            Vroom vroom
while that damn TV sits behind us and Arnold fires a rattling flurry of hypnic jerks
NOW WE BREAK
and it turns to a lil’ shoegaze of Wet Specimens
swaying dulcet rage
young bodies swell with the temperatures
I gleam and beam seeing all these faces
tequila with ice, opposite effect
I queue for water with exotic creatures
not quite peaCOCKS
not hens
flirting in corners
I am smitten in the buds of others’ horny love
Night Lunch returned with maximum wage-rage
            Livin laughin lovin shit
I need a seat
